THE UPRISING YOUTH

01/29/2014 theatre / dance

We explore variability of the physical training movement in contemporary dance and the ideas of socialist system in contemporary society.

THE UPRISING YOUTH

The era in which mass choreography was performed by thousands of young people, in unity and hope in future, is far behind. THE UPRISING YOUTH project takes us back to the forgotten and repressed era of socialism by researching dance as a mass culture within the Youth day celebration movement. Youth Day was celebrated throughout the former Yugoslavia on May 25 every year. This was also a celebration of Josip Broz Tito's birthday. In the weeks preceding this date youth ran a relay around the country and on his birthday Tito was ceremonially presented with the baton. The baton, which had passed through all major cities, contained a symbolic birthday message, ostensibly from the youth of the whole country.

UPRISING YOUTH has united several generations trying to reconstruct the Youth day celebration movement today. The performance group ensembles a ballerina who used to participate in Youth day celebrations, two performers whose birth dates correspond the end date of socialism and three young girls aged 13 to 17 who never heard of the Youth day celebration. THE UPRISING YOUTH had its realization in coproduction of artistic organization Counterattack with art collective MONTAЖ$TROJ. The project resulted in a dance performance choreographed by Nataša Mihoci and in dramaturgy of Borut Šeparović.
