To celebrate the International Women’s Day and to mark the start of a wide public discussion about the right to reproductive choice, art collective MONTAЖ$TROJ presents the cross-media project CYANKALI §218.
This project is a Croatian premiere of the acclaimed German play CYANKALI §218 by Friedrich Wolf from 1929. It served as a weapon during the fight for women’s and worker’s rights, and it was created as a part of a huge social movement to legalize abortion in Germany.
Berlin, working-class neighbourhood of Wedding, 1929. Paragraph 218 of the Criminal Code of German law, which illegalizes abortion, is effective. In the midst of an economic crisis, a young worker Hete seeks help to terminate her pregnancy due to social reasons. This search leads her to her tragic death.
This cross-media project consists of the sound reconstruction of the play CYANKALI §218 in eight episodes, preceded by an introductory episode published today, on 8th March. The episodes will be published during the coming 40 days. Along with the sound reconstruction, the project includes audio-visual and textual content which will be published on the official website of the project.
