CYANKALI §218

A pregnant woman who deliberately terminates her pregnancy or kills her fetus in her womb, shall be liable to imprisonment up to five years. Paragraph 218, Criminal Code of the German Reich.

Berlin, working-class neighbourhood of Wedding, 1929. Paragraph 218 of the Criminal Code of German Reich, which illegalizes abortion, is effective. In the midst of the economic crisis, a young worker Hete seeks help to terminate her pregnancy due to social reasons. This search leads her to the tragic end.

The acclaimed German play CYANKALI §218 was written by doctor, artist and communist Friedrich Wolf in 1929. It served as a weapon in fight for women’s and workers’ rights. It was created as a part of a huge social movement to legalize abortion in Germany.

CYANKALI §218, Croatian premiere of Friedrich Wolf’s play, is a cross-media project by the art collective MONTAЖ$TROJ. The project includes sound reconstruction of the play in eight episodes, as well as the audio-visual and textual content available on the official website of the project.
